More individual tuition is necessary for people seeking literacy support, a report published today has said.

The One to Onereport, commissioned by the Dublin Adult Learning Centre (Dalc), said that although individual tuition attracts the least funding, it is often the first step in addressing literacy difficulties.

The report found that for many students, their learning needs are met solely through one-to-one tuition, and that they do not aspire to have achievements accredited.

It said that for most people engaged in individual tuition, solutions to everyday tasks such as helping children do their homework or writing a birthday card is of more value than obtaining a qualification.

The report recommended that these "complex and nuanced changes" are valued within the wider adult literacy sector and that resources are put in place to support one-to-one students and tutors.

It also called for the different progression routes within Dalc (one-to-one, group learning, accredited, non-accredited) to be equally valued.
