Garda conferences planned on cross-Border criminality

Regional conferences are to be arranged in coming months as part of new measures under way to target subversive activity, drug trafficking and cross- Border smuggling.

The events will involve Louth-Meath and Cavan- Monaghan Garda divisions and others where closer PSNI liaison is being formulated.

Senior police on both sides of the Border are planning to step up joint activities to eliminate, as far as possible, Real IRA and Continuity IRA security threats, it has been revealed.

PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggott said the move would see faster evidence transfer, improved communication and the ability to bring more prosecutions over crimes in the neighbouring jurisdiction.

Folklore recordings available in libraries

Fifteen years worth of recordings of local history and folklore will now be available throughout the public library system following the digitising and cataloguing of recordings by Tralee folklore collectors Maurice and Jane O’Keeffe, and their purchase by the National Library.

The 1,484 hours of recordings of folklore in 14 counties from the Irish Life and Lore collection were undertaken by the O’Keeffes between 1994 and 2009.

The 32 oral history collections include recollections of 1916; Bord na Móna history; stories handed down of memories of the Famine and the 1798 Rebellion; land agitation and the Emergency. The recordings feature local characters in the main.

Gardaí arrest driver over man’s death

The driver of a car involved in a fatal incident in which a Polish pedestrian lost his life in the early hours of Sunday morning in Killarney, Co Kerry, has been arrested and questioned by gardaí after presenting himself at Killarney Garda station.

The man, who is in his 20s, went to the station accompanied by his solicitor, Pádraig O’Connell.

He was released without charge and a file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Tributes have been paid to Piotr Arciszewski (24) who worked in one of the oldest businesses in Killarney, MD O’Shea Sons, and who had built up a wide circle of friends. He was struck by a car which went out of control a short distance from his home and died at the scene.
