Minister for Environment Phil Hogan has confirmed that the State’s 440,000 septic tank owners will be required to pay a registration fee of €50 on a periodic basis to cover inspections of the tanks.

Mr Hogan yesterday held a news conference to “bring clarity” to the proposals he intends to introduce in pending legislation to ensure compliance with EU environmental directives.

He described the fee as “modest” and said it would not be renewable for long periods, perhaps every five years.

The move was designed to address suggestions that the introduction of septic tank inspections could cost homeowners as much as €300 a year.
