LIFESTYLE Q&A: Sean Gallagher, entrepreneur and presidential candidate

LIFESTYLE Q&A:Sean Gallagher, entrepreneur and presidential candidate

Do you think you have a healthy lifestyle?

I do, but there’s room for improvement. Many years ago I trained as a fitness instructor, so it’s always been an important element for me. Every so often I set myself little challenges. This year it was the Great Ireland Run in the Phoenix Park and two years ago I did the charity Lord of the Ring show where I boxed with Barry McGuigan and Katie Taylor. I won that at the ripe old age of 47.

How often do you exercise?

My target is to exercise at least four times a week, in the gym in Dundalk or out on the road, running or cycling. I don’t train competitively like I used to, but I did train for a black belt in judo and karate for 20 years, so I would do a lot of stretching to keep myself in shape.

Do you get your five a day?

Since I got married last year, I’m in a much better position of getting my five a day. My wife is a great cook and makes sure I eat a more stable diet. I’d have fruit with porridge in the morning and I eat vegetables and salad and as much fresh food as possible.

Do you worry?

I think everybody worries a little bit – the key thing is to make sure you are only worrying about the things you can do something about. One thing I’m focused on is trying to worry less.

What do you do to relax?

I spend time with family and friends, sitting chatting, relaxing and reconnecting with people. On a more active basis, I love to walk whether that’s on the beach where I live outside Dundalk or in the Cooley mountains.

What’s your unhealthiest habit?

I travel to work with small businesses all over the country, so I have to be careful not to leave long gaps between eating. I used to eat chocolate bars en route but in Dragons' DenI invested in a company that does sunflower seeds, so I carry those with me to snack on.
