A group of Independent and small party TDs have taken to Dublin city centre to distribute leaflets urging people not to pay the household tax and water charges.

Socialist deputies Joe Higgins and Clare Daly have been joined by Richard Boyd Barrett and Joan Collins of the People Before Profit Alliance for the event outside the St Stephen's Green shopping centre.

Also distributing leaflets to members of the public are Wexford TD Mick Wallace and Tipperary deputy Seamus Healy.

Mr Higgins said the group's aim was to achieve "mass non-registration and non-payment" by St Patrick's Day. "If a mass of householders stand together in solidarity and demand a change if policy then the Government will not be able to persecute people," Mr Higgins said.

Also supporting the campaign are Independents Thomas Pringle, Luke Flanagan and John Halligan.
