SEEDS of chillies - and their relations: aubergine, sweet pepper and tomato - should all be sown now, and their cultivation is roughly similar, although chilli peppers are the least demanding. After they have sprouted, the plants can move out to a frost-free greenhouse, but they do require artificial heat to get started. Sow seeds thinly in a seed tray (don't mix varieties) of moist compost in a warm place (1821 Centigrade is recommended). As soon as they have germinated, move them to the brightest possible position to prevent their becoming weak and "leggy". When they have grown their first set of true leaves (which follow the rather basic-looking seed leaves) they can be potted on into three-inch pots. Transplant into large pots, into grow bags or into a greenhouse border when they have produced their first flowers. Feed regularly, and keep an eye out for pests.
