Gardaí have begun searching in Co Monaghan for the remains of a man who is believed to have been killed by the IRA in the early 1980s.

A Garda spokesman said the search, targeted at specific sites at Cullaville in North Monaghan, was for the remains of Charles Armstrong who disappeared from South Armagh in August 1981.

Today’s operation follows the discovery of new information by the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims' Remains.

The Commission was established in May 1999 by the British and Irish Governments to assist the in locating the whereabouts of nine missing persons killed by the IRA.
