Following the discovery of his body, gardaí sealed off the crime scene for a forensic and technical examination.

The suspect was arrested close to the scene a short time later.

Gardaí did not reveal how the man had died, although it is understood he was the victim of a violent assault.

Mr McInerney’s remains were later removed from his home so they could undergo a postmortem examination.

This was carried out at the Midwestern Regional Hospital in Co Limerick by State Pathologist Prof Marie Cassidy yesterday evening.

The 22-year-old arrested on suspicion of the murder was taken to Templemore Garda station for questioning.

He was last night detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

A Garda spokesman said the investigation was ongoing but that detectives are not looking for any other suspects in connection with the man’s death.

The man can initially be questioned for up to 24 hours, but this period of detention may be extended to facilitate the investigation.

Cllr Lily O’Brien, the Mayor of Templemore, said the community was in shock following Mr McInerney’s death.

She extended her sympathy to his family.
