'Flood of injustices' break O'Rourke's heart

Leader of the House Mary O'Rourke said her heart was broken over the issues of immigration, visas and asylum seekers.

Leader of the House Mary O'Rourke said her heart was broken over the issues of immigration, visas and asylum seekers.

"No matter what you do you cannot keep up with the flood of injustices which are brought each day, on my phone, by letter, by card and by e-mail. I don't understand. There seem to be different rules all the time."

Brian Hayes, Fine Gael leader in the House, had complained about the way in which the Department of Justice was playing what he described as a demagogue role over who could come into this country.

He said the case of a Romanian couple had been brought to his notice. They had been here since 2003 and had three children, one of whom had been born in this country.

They wished to return to Romania for a visit so that the grandparents could see the Irish-born child.

However, they had been told by the Department of Justice that, while they could depart with this child, they would have to leave their Romanian-born children behind in Ireland.

He believed that "we needed to get our heads around this kind of fortress Ireland mentality".

Ms O'Rourke said she did not think the Department of Justice was the right department to deal with immigration. At present it was impossible to get through to the section dealing with it.

She did not comprehend how asylum seekers, who had been here for four years or more, could be told to leave.
