Saudi Arabia said five policemen were killed and two injured in a clash with Muslim militants in the capital Riyadh.
An Interior Ministry statement read out on Saudi television also said a top wanted militant was arrested along with a number of other suspects.
It said police had found grenades and automatic rifles in the militants' hideout.
