Five people were killed in a two-car collision in Co Donegal early this morning.

A Garda spokesperson said three women and two men died in the crash which occurred on a bend in the road at Lisfannon, Buncrana at 4.20am. One of the cars burst into flames as a result of the collision.

All of those involved were non-nationals, although the names of the deceased have not yet been released.

Six people were travelling in the two cars. Two men and one woman were pronounced dead at the scene and one man and two women were taken to hospital with serious injuries. Two women died later from their injuries at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry.

One man remains in a critical condition in Letterkenny General Hospital.

The bodies of three of the victims have been removed to Letterkenny General Hospital where post mortem examinations are due to take place.

As a result of the collision, Gardai at Buncrana have warned motorists the Lisfannon road, which is on the main Derry to Buncrana road has been closed until further notice.

Road conditions on surrounding roads are very dangerous due to ice and dense fog.
