Fire on boat off Co Mayo coast extinguished

The fire aboard a fishing boat 25 miles off Erris Head, Co Mayo has been put out by the four crew members.

It is understood the fire broke out in the engine room. Ballyglass lifeboat was called out by Malin Head coastgaurd just after 12.30.

Conditions on the sea were said to be poor, with a gale force six wind blowing.

The boat is now being towed into port by the lifeboat.

Elsewhere, six crewmen aboard a fishing trawler that got into difficulties off Hook Head, Co Wexford, are now safe after the Dunmore East lifeboat went to their aid this morning.

The Celtic Venture, a trawler from Clogherhead, Co Louth, suffered engine problems and was drifting in "terrible conditions".

The lifeboat carried oil to the vessel and the boat's crew was able to temporarily repair a fractured oil pipe. The fishing boat has now been escorted to Dunmore East.
