The Fine Gael spokesman on justice, Mr Jim Higgins, has called for a review of security at banks and shopping complexes after an armed robbery in Cork yesterday. Raiders on a motorcycle got away with a sum of money after robbing a security van outside a shopping centre in Douglas.

The pillion passenger was armed with a shotgun which he used to threaten security guards. However, no shots were fired and no one was injured. The gunman was described as being of thin build and about 510["] in height.

A Garda spokeswoman said the amount of money taken in the raid was "not very big". The motorcycle believed to have been used in the raid was later found abandoned near Abbeyleix.

Mr Higgins, saying there had been "a huge increase" in armed robberies in the last three months, called on the Minister for Justice to make a statement.

He said Mr O'Donoghue had given "categorical assurances" ail that he would introduce additional security measures to counter such armed robberies.
