Fine Gael has "abandoned its political responsibilities and is trying to fool the electorate into believing that it will not be presented with the full facts about the abortion referendum," according to Mr Dermot Ahern, T.D.

Mr Ahern said amending legislation was introduced before Christmas to ensure that the Referendum Commission presented the public with the full facts about the upcoming referendum.

"The legislation has led to a change in the practices which existed since 1998 and will enhance the process of informing the public about the facts of this referendum," he said.

He added that the public information campaign would be conducted using television, newspaper and radio advertisements, information leaflets, the internet, and low-call phone information lines.
