A woman and her eight-year-old son escaped injury last night after a pipe bomb exploded in the living room of their north Belfast home.

Severe damage was caused to the room by the blast at Garton Way, Greencastle, while the family's pet Staffordshire bull terrier was wounded by shrapnel.

Detectives investigating the attack do not believe it was sectarian, an RUC spokesman said.
