Nearly 100 boats were destroyed or damaged in Spain's Balearic islands by the ripple effect from an earthquake that left more than 770 people dead inAlgeria.

Last night's quake caused long waves of up two meters(more than six feet) that damaged boats in ports of the popular Spanish island group north of Algeria that includes Ibiza, Majorca and Menorca.

"In all ports there have been problems with ships," theBalearics' regional councillor for domestic affairs, Josep MariaCosta, told a news conference.

Costa estimated at 34 the number of aftershocks measuring morethan 3.0 on the Richter scale between 1845 GMT Wednesday and 0600GMT today.
