The Netherlands was awash in a sea of orange today as Crown Prince Willem-Alexander wed an exuberant Argentine whose father's military junta past revived a tradition of controversial Dutch royal matches.

A tango band played and Ms Maxima Zorreguieta (30) wept after she exchanged vows with the 34-year-old Prince of Orange.

Crowds, some with faces painted orange and sporting orange wigs, let out a deafening cheer as the couple said I do before 1,600 guests at a Protestant ceremony with Catholic touches.

The Dutch have warmed to the blonde former banker since an initial furore after the engagement was announced last year.

The pair - she in sumptuous ivory silk gown with five-metre train designed by Italian Valentino, he in naval uniform - were earlier married by the mayor of Amsterdam in a civil ceremony at the Beurs van Berlage, a former bourse, attended by 600 guests.

Maxima's parents did not attend. Her father Jorge, agriculture minister during Argentina's 1976-83 military dictatorship when up to 30,000 people vanished or were killed, announced after the uproar over his past that he would not come.

An anonymous caller had issued a warning just before the religious ceremony that an explosion would strike the wedding location, Amsterdam's 600-year-old Nieuwe Kerk (New Church). Police said other threats had been received, but did not evacuate the area.

Small smoke bombs were thrown as the couple rode through Amsterdam in a closed horse-drawn carriage after their nuptials - echoing the violent street protests that greeted the wedding of Prince Willem-Alexander's mother Queen Beatrix to a German in 1966.

But most of the smoke this time was a patriotic orange, set off by a group of artists from a roof along the route.

About 10 anti-monarchist activists were arrested during the day, including one person at a police station where protesters scuffled briefly with police, local media reported.
