A CONVICTED drugs courier refused to identify the person who gave him £20,000 worth of ecstasy tablets because he had been threatened and feared for the safety of his family, a court heard yesterday.

Christopher Doherty (32), from Dublin, told Cork Circuit Criminal Court that he received a threat two months ago and was not willing to name either those in Dublin who gave him drugs to bring to Cork and those from whom he later got drugs in Cork.

Doherty was giving evidence in the trial of Mr Edward Scanlon (49), of Laburnum Drive, Model Farm Road, Cork, who denies possessing ecstasy, cocaine and heroin and possessing ecstasy and cocaine for supply on March 20th, 1997.

The case continues on Monday before Judge A.G. Murphy.
