US secretary of state Hillary Clinton made a brief stopover at Shannon airport last night on her way back to Washington from Prague.

Mrs Clinton’s Special Air Mission aircraft landed at Shannon at 6.02pm. She had earlier attended the signing of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty at Prague Castle with US president Barack Obama.

There was a high security presence, with gardaí and US secret service standing guard around the aircraft while it was on the ground for little over an hour. Airport sources said there were no plans by Air Force One, Mr Obama’s aircraft, to stop in Shannon.
