Some 5,000 people filled Milan's Cathedral today for a mass for victims of Italy's worst civil aviation disaster and heard the city's cardinal speak of "errors, negligence and accidents".

Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini presided at the memorial, which was attended by President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

"Last Monday, a tragic series of errors, negligence and accidents suddenly cast us into darkness, tears, wounds and mourning", Cardinal Martini said in his sermon.

Seven people, including directors of the company that runs Milan airport and those of Italy's air traffic agency, are under investigation in connection with the crash, which killed 118 people.

The officials are being investigated on possible charges of complicity in involuntary disaster, a charge similar to multiple manslaughter.

A Scandinavian Airlines System jet collided on its take-off run with a commercial jet whose crew had apparently taken a wrong turn in dense fog.

All crew and passengers on both planes and four ground staff died when the plane crashed into a baggage-handling hangar and burst into flames.

The crash has raised questions about the airport's procedures, including its lack of a functioning ground radar system, which some experts say could have prevented the crash.

At the memorial mass, flags from countries whose citizens were killed in the crash - including Norway, Sweden and Denmark - were flown at half staff.
