Gardaí have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a person whose body was found in a burned-out car behind a church in Co Kerry yesterday afternoon.

Gardaí received a call shortly after 2pm and when they arrived at the car park at the rear of Curraheen Church, some two and a half miles west of Tralee, they discovered the body in a burned out car.

According to a Garda spokesman, the car was badly burned and it was impossible to say whether the person found in the driver's seat was male or female.

Gardaí requested the assistance of pathologist, Dr Margaret Bolster, who was due to carry out a preliminary examination at the scene before the body was removed to Tralee General Hospital for a full postmortem.
