Congratulations to Bord na gCon, the Irish greyhound board, which has just got planning permission for no less than 101 apartments on a one acre site at South Lotts Road in Ringsend. Part of the Shelbourne Park greyhound track, the site is now thought to be worth up to £10 million, according to property sources. One of the last apartment sites in Dublin 4, it is likely to be eyed with some interest by Zoe Development's Liam Carroll who is about to start work on several hundred apartments at the gasworks site across the road. The greyhound board should make another killing later this month when it sells a 4.86 acre site at Harolds Cross for an estimated £7 million. Part of the grounds of the Harolds Cross Greyhound Stadium, it has planning permission for 81 houses.

With such a lovely lot of money in the kitty, the board should be able to make substantial improvements to the Shelbourne Park stadium. However, it appears from its planning application that it intends to make fairly minor alterations, including new offices, turnstiles, kitchens etc. That should leave them with a very hefty sum for a rainy day.
