'Commute is scenic lake drive'

The drift is not just out of Dublin

The drift is not just out of Dublin. Last year, John Maloney and his wife Simone moved from the Cork city suburb of Douglas to rural Co Clare. village of Scariff (population 800).

They bought a house one mile outside the village of Scariff (population 800) where the view from their patio includes an island in the middle of Lough Derg.

A pier with a boat lies 100 metres away. John says they made the move "not for financial reasons" but chose the area for its "peace and tranquillity and the school". Rachel, 10, Conor, 8, and Aoife, 5, now go to the nearby Steiner school.

John's "commute" is a drive around the "fabulously scenic" lakeshore to Killaloe where he has set up a new office for American company Musco, Ireland's biggest provider of floodlighting for sports pitches.
