The German market was subject to heavy trading volumes, climbing to a seven week high in postbourse trading.

The blue-chip DAX index opened higher, catching up with last week's Wall Street gains after Friday's holiday, and headed higher throughout the session.

Dealers said the market was mainly responding to technical factors, in the absence of fresh fundamental news.

A nervousness about Wall Street contributed to French stocks closing slightly lower than recent days. "Paris is tracking New York, the Dow's jerky close on Friday scared investors," a trader said. "Today the Dow made gains but as it pared them, Paris went down," he added.
