Mr John Roth, chief executive of Nortel Networks, said the creativity of the Irish, as well as the high level of education, had already given the Republic an advantage in the "Internet revolution" .

Giving the annual McLaughlin Lecture at the Institution of Engineers in Ireland, Mr Roth said that in a few short years "the Internet has created volatile markets, with many new competitors and customers, driving major changes in business and industry structures."
