Minister for Natural Resources Pat Carey has agreed to the sale of Tipperary zinc and lead mine Lisheen by international mining group Anglo American to London-listed Vedanta Resources.

The $300 million (€216.9 million) deal was agreed last year, but the Minister’s approval was required before ownership of the State mining lease for Lisheen Mine could be transferred.

Mr Carey said he had been assured by Vedanta that no local job losses were envisaged. Vedanta, which has operations in India, Zambia and Australia, has met local groups in Lisheen to allay fears over its environmental track record and its cost-reduction strategy. Lisheen Mine employs about 372 people.
