An influx of foreign direct investment by companies including Apple and Google will provide a much-needed boost to the construction industry, the IDA has said.
The industrial development body said 10 recent investments would require the building of facilities with a total area of more than 1.5 million sq ft.
The IDA estimates that this will spark a need for around 1,500 construction workers over a period of two years.
Most of the developments are manufacturing plants in the life sciences, information and communication technology, and data centre sectors. Among the firms planning new buildings are Eli Lilly, Boston Scientific, Allergan, Microsoft, Analog Devices, Apple and Google.
“If we are to achieve the levels of employment we are targeting, the construction sector will have to play a role in this,” said Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton.
IDA chief executive Barry O’Leary said the spill-over effects of IDA announcements on FDI were sometimes overlooked. “Chief among these is the boost to the construction trade,” he said.
