TEASER: A player making a stroke on the bank of a bunker hits the ball to the top of the bank. It then rolls back down the bank and comes to rest against his foot. The player removes his foot and the ball rolls into his footprint. What is the ruling?
ANSWER: In matchplay, the player loses the hole (Rule 19-2a). In strokeplay, the player incurs a penalty of two strokes (Rule 192b) and must replace the ball on the spot at which it came to rest against his foot. A further penalty under Rule 18-2a (Ball at rest moved by player) would not be appropriate in the circumstances.
