Shearer loses out to Ronaldo

BARCELONA striker Ronaldo eclipsed Newcastle's Alan Shearer to win World Soccer magazine's player of the year title yesterday.

George Weah of AC Milan came third in the readers' poll. Berti Vogts was voted best manager alter steering Germany to European Championship success. He received nearly three times as many votes as Alex Ferguson.
