RAILWAY UNION’S flawless season has still to be dented, the Leinster champions maintaining their record of having won every game, in all competitions, since the season began with a 3-2 defeat of Loreto in the league on Saturday.

Nicola Evans scored a goal in each half for Railway, her first giving them the lead midway through the first period when she finished off Jean McDonnell’s fine work down the left.

Loreto, who were without Nikki Symmons (the international expects to be out for six weeks after an operation on her hip), levelled through Cathy McKean before the break, but Kate Dillon and Evans again put the hosts 3-1 up.

Nicci Daly set up a nervy last 10 minutes when she pulled a goal back, but Railway held out to end Loreto’s perfect league record and extend their own.

A second-half goal from Jenny Burke, which was enough to beat Old Alexandra at Milltown, ensured third-placed Hermes took advantage of Loreto’s defeat, moving them within two points of second and five adrift of Railway.

Pembroke Wanderers picked up three badly needed points with a 3-0 win over Trinity on Saturday, before beating the same opposition in the Leinster Senior Cup yesterday, Hilda Maguire getting the only goal of the game in extra time. It was the only completed cup tie yesterday. The game between Old Alexandra II and Genesis was abandoned early in the second half due to a frozen pitch; all the other ties were postponed.
