Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has made his first summer move in pursuit of European Champions' League glory by launching a £5 million bid for German star Markus Babbel.
The Bayern Munich centre-half is wanted by United both to enable Ronny Johnsen to stay in his midfield anchor role and provide cover for injury-plagued Gary Pallister.
The Bundesliga champions, who have already lost Jurgen Klinsmann to Sampdoria, confirmed an offer for the highly-rated player has been tabled and was under serious consideration.
