Godolphin managed to turn Aljabr's aborted 16,000-mile challenge for the Kentucky Derby to his advantage as the grey won the feature of Glorious Goodwood, the Group One Champagne Lanson Sussex Stakes.

The victory was the highlight of a 50 to 1 four-timer for Frankie Dettori, who also took the Group Two Richmond Stakes on Sheikh Mohammed's Bachir.

After his fruitless trip across the Atlantic, Aljabr greatly encouraged his connections with his second to Sendawar in the Group One St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

With the Aga Khan's colt absent, he made all the running under Dettori, beating off stubborn opposition from Docksider to win by a length. While those outside the Godolphin camp considered the American trip a waste of time and money, racing manager Simon Crisford explained it had a calming effect on Aljabr, a winner here as a juvenile.

"Mentally he is a lot more relaxed now than he was this time a year ago," he said. Aljabr, giving Godolphin its eighth Group One of the season and second in four days after Daylami's win in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot last Saturday, may now have a rematch with Sendawar in the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp in September.

"It was a race to get him back for the St James's Palace and we were probably a race too short, and met a good one on the way," said the winning rider.

"But he was entitled to win a Group One race as a three-year-old and I wouldn't mind taking Sendawar on now."

Bachir also lowered the twoyear-old track record in the Richmond, beating Hunting Lion by a length and a half, and John Gosden will also send his horse to France, for the Prix Morny.

Dettori, beginning a hat-trick, Gosden and Sheikh Mohammed combined for the Marriott Hotels Goodwood Stakes (Handicap) with top-weight High And Mighty.

The Dettori quartet and the Gosden treble were completed by Untold Riches in the Weatherbys Bank Fillies' Stakes.
