JOCKEY Vie Deering was yesterday given a three week ban when he became the first victim of the "totting up" system introduced this year.
He was referred to the Jockey Club disciplinary committee after his third breach of the whip regulations this year on Keston Pond at Newcastle last Wednesday.
As the rider has been banned for more than 12 days since January 1st, he as suspended for 21 days Flat racing from this Saturday, with five days deferred until February 16th, 1997.
A Jockey Club spokesman John Maxse explained. "This is the first suspension of its kind. Vie Deering has to serve 16 days and he then has five days suspended.
"If in the next six months he is banned again for the same offence the five days will be added to his ban and will count towards the 12 day threshold."
Gary Hind yesterday failed in his bid to overturn a seven day ban. The jockey was contesting a judgment that he was guilty of irresponsible riding when steering Poppy Carew to victory at Newmarket last Friday.
