A stunning fightback by Alaves earned the Spanish underdogs a 3-3 draw with Inter Milan in their UEFA Cup fourth round first-leg tie in Vitoria.

The Basque side, in their first season of European competition, took the lead after 43 minutes through Javi Moreno but then appeared to be heading for a heavy defeat as Inter went 3-1 after an hour.

Alvaro Recoba scored twice and Christian Vieri added a third for the Italians but Oscar Tellez reduced the arrears in the 70th minute and Ivan Alonso equalised soon after.

A late first-half goal put Barcelona in the driving seat against AEK Athens as they won 1-0 in Greece.

Luis Enrique pounced on a rebound from the host defence to score the only goal in the 41st minute in front of 24,000 fans.

Spanish side Rayo Vallecano, who only entered the tournament on the basis of a place awarded for fair play last season, grabbed their chance with both hands to take a 4-1 advantage into the return match against Bordeaux.

Eindhoven took a 24thminute lead through Andre Ooijer and although Patrick Mboma headed an equaliser a thundering drive by Dennis Rommedahl 15 minutes from time condemned the Italian visitors to defeat.

The match between Slavia Prague of the Czech Republic and German visitors Kaiserslautern ended goalless.
