Madam, – In your Editorial on judicial remuneration (June 23rd) you say that the constitutional position is, at worst, unclear. I would like to challenge this pessimistic view.

Article 35.5 specifies “a judge”. But for it to have the meaning read into it by Paul Gallagher, Brian Cowen and Dermot Ahern, the wording would have to be “judges”.

I suppose judicial independence would have required a more nuanced, less direct approach by the government to the judiciary to ask them to share the pain of others paid out of public funds. It did not require misrepresentation of the Constitution. – Your, etc,
