Sir, - The debate over whether or not Francis Stuart was an anti-Semite and an unrepentant admirer of Nazi Germany will continue for some time to come. Liam Carson (October 30th) draws attention to the fact that on February 6th, 1943, Stuart declared himself to be "glad to be here in a country that can produce such men, who can still overcome all human limitations". He was praising the German army at Stalingrad.

In December 1942 the persecution and extermination of the Jews was raised in the House of Commons. In February 1943 (the same month in which Francis stuart was praising "such men") Lord Beveridge (later of National Health fame) wrote an article for the Observer highlighting the torture and systematic murder of the Jews in German-occupied areas. It was in the paper. People knew. Francis Stuart must have known.

But let's not be complacent or self-righteous about Francis Stuart's role in all of this. What did the good people do for the Jews? - Yours, etc.,
