Madam, - I read with interest and anticipation the reports in your edition of April 21st about the proposed new agency to defend consumers' rights in "rip-off Ireland". I had just returned from failing to have my car serviced by a well known garage that will receive no publicity from me.

Despite assurances when booking in that my car would be ready in time for me to collect my children from school, the firm phoned me at nearly noon to say that work hadn't started yet and the car wouldn't be ready in time after all.

Their attitude was that they were doing me a favour by accepting my car at all, had no apologies for wasting my morning and left me to search for my car in their enormous car park.

I then had to queue to pay an exorbitant amount to cross a bridge. Not only are we being ripped off but we are being made to jump through hoops for the privilege. - Yours, etc.,
