Sir, – Marion Walsh (Letters, March 28th) criticises Holly Cairns TD, leader of the Social Democrats, for failing to show “some courtesy” in her remarks following Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s announcement of his impending resignation. In fact, the first words out of Ms Cairns’s mouth in the Dáil, when she addressed the outgoing Taoiseach last Wednesday, were good wishes. In response, Mr Varadkar thanked Ms Cairns for “her kind words on a personal level”.
Ms Walsh’s error is understandable, given those warm remarks were not reported by the media, which preferred to accuse Opposition leaders, as a whole, of gratuitous bad manners. – Yours, etc,
