The National Youth Council of Ireland has warned that as many as 100,000 young people who are eligible to vote may not be able to cast their ballot on 11th June because they are not on the electoral register.

Research carried out by NYCI and the Central Statistics Office suggests that about 20% of 18-25 year olds may not be registered to vote.

The same research also showed that non-registration - and not voter apathy - was the main reason why young people do not vote.

NYCI has called on young people, who haven't registered, to apply for inclusion on the supplementary electoral register as soon as possible.

The youth body has also urged third level students, who are registered, to register to vote by post if they won't be able to get to their polling station on the day.
