Tehran - Iran's new president, Mr Mohammad Khatami, has appointed a woman as a vice-president, according to a report in Iran News. If the report is confirmed, Ms Massoumeh Ebtekar would be the first woman to serve in a high-ranking government position since Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution.

The English-language daily said on Saturday that President Khatami had appointed Ms Ebtekar, a US-educated woman who represented Iran at the Beijing women's conference two years ago, as vice-president for environmental affairs. - (AP)
