A FIREFIGHTER has described how she saw the body of one of her colleagues thrown into the air following a horrific crash which claimed the lives of two emergency workers.

Sabrina McCarthy was giving evidence on the opening day of the trial of Niall Shannon, who is charged in connection with the deaths of Garda Brian Kelleher and fireman Michael Liston in Co Limerick two years ago.

The 21-year-old from Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co Kerry has pleaded not guilty to dangerous driving causing the deaths of the men at Borrigone, Askeaton, Co Limerick on February 25th, 2007.

Yesterday, on the opening day of the trial, senior counsel John O’Kelly said that the accused man’s Audi car hit both Garda Kelleher and fireman Michael Liston, who had been working at the scene of an earlier accident, throwing them into the air.
