The man who stole Kilkenny hurler DJ Carey's car was sentenced to five months in prison at Waterford District Court today.

John McGrath (21) Birch Drive, Birchwood, Waterford pleaded guilty to taking the BMW as well as €2,000 cash from the car at Crookstown Motors, Co Kildare on August 20th.

Carey retrieved the car after giving chase when it was stolen from the forecourt of a garage.

However, after a confrontation, McGrath ran off but was arrested some days later in Waterford.

The court heard McGrath - married man with a five-month-old child and a series of convictions for larceny, burglary and public order offences - had a drug problem and was now attending an addiction counselling centre.

Judge William Harnett sentenced him to five months for taking the car and fined him €2,000. McGrath was also banned from driving for five years.
