Up to 60 killed. 16 seriously injured, in bombing of bridge at Luzane in Kosovo on Saturday. Nis Express bus to Pristina hit; injured include four "severely burned" Albanian children. US f-16 fighter crashes near Metic in south-west Serbia returning from combat mission, pilot picked up. Air raid sirens sound in Belgrade on Sunday evening, signalling possible start of 40th night of bombing. Earlier alert from 12.22 p.m. until 1.51 p.m., no NATO raids reported during alert; previous alert lifted at 6.21 a.m. Woman killed in apartment block, 60 injured, in NATO air raid on nearby police station on Kosovska Mitrovica, north-west of Pristina, several apartment buildings damaged. More than 30 fuel dumps of refinery in Novi Sad hit by 40 NATO bombs and set on fire.

Refugees:

Crisis continued to worsen with officials from UNHCR in Macedonia facing overflowing camps and no let-up to stream of thousands fleeing Kosovo. Thousands more begin arriving at Blace border crossing into Macedonia yesterday. Albania says it needs financial support and debt relief to cope. After two days during which Serb forces expelled nearly 20,000 residents of Prizren, the flow of ethnic Albanian refugees crossing Kukes in Albania slows dramatically, indications that Serbs now trying to keep civilians in the town.

Diplomacy:

Three US soldiers, captured by the Yugoslav army a month ago, handed over in Belgrade to Maerican civil rights loeader, Rev Jesse Jackson, and walk into Croatia.

US Congress team claims "historic breakthrough" with Russian deputies on framework to resolve crisis, including armed international force in Kosovo. US Congressman Curt Weldon says "the document was faxed to President Milosevic and we were told by his representative that he was no reason why Yugoslavia would not accept the basic framework we have outlined there as parliamentarians". No immediate official reaction from Belgrade or Washington.

President Boris Yeltsin summons several key ministers to discuss further diplomatic steps Russia could take to help end NATO air strikes. Mr Viktor Chenomyrdin to have talks in Washington today.

Pope John Paul announced a month of prayer for peace, particularly in the Balkans and Africa.

UN Commissioner for Human Rights, Mrs Mary Robinson, visits Blace refugee camp in Macedonia and says there is a role for Europe and Ireland in solving the crisis.

Canadian Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy hopes UN could broker diplomatic solution, but says military force would be vital to make Kosovo secure.

Inside Serbia:

Yugoslav opposition leader and former general directs harsh criticism at Milosevic and says "his political mission is through." Vuk Obradovic, leader of Social Democratic Party of Serbia, says "Milosevic is too vulnerable...His political mission is over."
