EDINBURGH - Churches were thrown into controversy today after a two-year study unveiled evidence of domestic violence by clergymen.

Research carried out by a leading academic at the University of Edinburgh's Department of Divinity found many clergymen's wives had suffered mental, physical and sexual abuse at the hands of their husbands. Ms Lesley MacDonald, who co-ordinated the study, interviewed 23 women as part of her investigation.
