Lusaka - The UN mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo has failed and African leaders must intensify pressure on the President, Mr Laurent Kabila, to abide by the Lusaka peace agreement, a senior UN official said yesterday.

Mr Kamel Morjane, special representative of the UN Security Council to the Congo, said in an interview that none of the conditions sought by the UN for the deployment of forces to police a ceasefire agreed last year had been met.

He said the UN had come to the Congo at the request of African leaders and now looked to them for a solution because prospects for peace in the Congo remained remote. Zimbabwe, Namibia and Angola are fighting alongside Mr Kabila's forces in the former Zaire while former allies Rwanda and Uganda back the splintered rebel groups trying to end his rule.)
