An Australian accountant who stole £40,000 (€50,790) worth of laptop computers in two months by placing bogus rental orders has been jailed for two years by Judge Elizabeth Dunne.

David McDonald (33), originally from Hernehill, Perth, Western Australia, pleaded guilty to 11 sample counts of larceny of the laptop computers and the forgery of bank drafts between March 3rd and May 10th.

McDonald, with an address at St Michael's Street, London, also pleaded guilty to escaping from lawful custody on May 10th, after he got out a rear door at Harcourt Terrace Garda station following his arrest.

Garda Des Rogers told Mr Luan O Braonβin, prosecuting, that McDonald used a number of false names when placing orders with various rental companies.

The orders were usually made by fax or over the phone and he claimed he worked for companies such as Cadbury Schweppes and AGFA. None of the laptops was recovered.
