Two Syrians including a child were killed today when an unknown assailant opened fire at them with a machinegun in eastern Lebanon, witnesses said.

They said two other people were seriously injured in the attack which occurred at dawn near Chtaura in eastern Lebanon.

It was the third violent incident aimed at Syrians in Lebanon since the beginning of August, as Lebanon witnessed an army crackdown against anti-Syrian Christian dissidents .

In August, security sources said two Syrian workers were killed and two wounded when a grenade they were tampering with exploded in their apartment in mainly Christian East Beirut.[

Earlier in the month two other Syrian workers were killed and a third injured when an unidentified assailant threw a grenade at them in central Lebanon.

Syria has some 20,000 troops and hundreds of thousands of workers in Lebanon. Their presence rankles with many Lebanese specially Christians who resent Syria's domination of Lebanese politics.
