The RTÉ television presenter and architect, Duncan Stewart, has regained consciousness in a Belarus hospital after sustaining internal injuries in a fall while filming on Monday evening.

He has been taken off the critical list and was deemed well enough to be transferred from a hospital in Bragin, south eastern Belarus, to Gomel around 100 km away.

Mr Stewart's son, Marcus, and brother, Ercus, flew to Belarus yesterday morning to be with him. They flew into Minsk airport before being transferred around 200km overland to Gomel.

Mr Stewart, whose TV programmes include About the House and Eco Eye, travelled to Belarus last Thursday with the Chernobyl Children's Project, which is run by Ms Adi Roche. He was working with the charity overseeing the building of a day centre for children in the town of Zhytkovitchi. He was also in Belarus to capture footage for an item on nuclear energy, which is to be carried on Eco Eye. It was during filming on Monday that he fell and sustained injuries to his upper body.

A spokesman for the Chernobyl Children's Project said while some media reports suggested Mr Stewart had sustained a punctured lung during his fall, this does not appear to have been the case.

"It seems he has some internal injuries on his upper body, but the nature of those injuries hasn't been established yet," the spokesman said.
