FILM of the man who claims he is the chief suspect in the murder of Veronica Guerin, and his colleagues, apparently mocking the journalist after her death was shown on CBS's 60 Minutes last night.

The top US news programme showed a tape of several people on a Carribean holiday last spring, which it said had been acquired from an associate of the self described murder suspect.

It had never been seen before by the police or public, CBS claimed.

In the video the men are shown drinking, sun bathing and splashing about in a private swimming pool.

Two men are shown raising their glasses while lying in the pool and saying: "Here's one for Veronica Guerin." Another one joins in saying: "Crime doesn't pay.

In a 20 minute segment on the journalist's murder Mr Steve Krofi, a 60 Minutes reporter, said the self described chief suspect in the murder was a "nasty thug and suspected drug trafficker."

The death of the most important crime reporter in Ireland has become a national obsession there, he said.

CBS sources say that one of those allegedly involved in Ms Guerin's murder passed the video tape to a CBS news producer when the station was researching the subject. The programme carried two clips of about 10 seconds each from the home made video of the suspect and his associates.

The programme was withheld from broadcast in Ireland.

Normally 60 Minutes can be watched on terrestrial cable and satellite stations broadcasting into Europe. However, it is understood CBS was concerned at possible legal action if the programme was shown in Ireland.
