The UUP leader, Mr David Trimble, has said he is very pleased that the US administration supports the suspension of the Northern Ireland Assembly and Executive, following his meeting in Washington yesterday with the National Security Adviser, Mr Sandy Berger.

President Clinton, in his recent public statements, has not said that he supports the suspension. Neither has the Irish Government expressed support for it.

Asked by The Irish Times if it was certain that the United States supported suspension, Mr Trimble said: "That is what I have just been told." The UUP leader said they had also discussed what might be done over the next few weeks.
